The Calgary Wranglers announce today their leadership group for the 2022-23 season:

 

Brett Sutter, Captain

Matthew Phillips, Assistant Captain

   Nick DeSimone, Assistant Captain

 

Sutter, a veteran of 974 American Hockey League games, comes to Calgary after seven seasons with the Ontario Reign (AHL) and five as their captain. Sutter was also the captain of the Charlotte Checkers (2011-12 to 2013-14) during his time with the Carolina Hurricanes American Hockey League affiliate.

The Viking, Alberta native’s career has come full circle after being originally drafted by the Calgary Flames in the sixth round, 179th overall, in the 2005 NHL Draft, playing for their former AHL affiliates the Quad City Flames (2007-08 – 2008-09) and Abbotsford Heat (2009-10).

Sutter played his 1,000th career pro game last season (974 AHL games, 60 NHL games) on January 27, 2022, becoming the third Sutter to accomplish the milestone, joining uncles Brent and Ron.

Phillips, a 24-year-old Calgary-product, is entering his sixth season with the Calgary Flames affiliate. Phillips led the team in scoring a season ago with 31 goals and 37 assists for 68 points, all career-highs. This is Phillips second straight season wearing an “A” for the team.

The Former Victoria Royals (WHL) captain was drafted by the Flames in the sixth round, 166th overall, in the 2016 NHL Draft

DeSimone, from East Amherst, New York, is in his second season in the Flames farm system. DeSimone had four goals and 21 assists for 25 points in 68 games with the Stockton Heat a season ago.

The 27-year-old blueliner was an assistant captain for the San Jose Barracuda (2019-20 to 2020-21) during his time with the San Jose Sharks affiliate

The Wranglers kick off their first season in Calgary on Sunday, October 16th with a matinee against the Coachella Valley Firebirds at 1:00pm MT at the Scotiabank Saddledome.
